Former WBA featherweight champion Freddie Norwood (42-3-3, 23 KO?s) who was picked by trainer Freddie Roach to serve as one of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao?s sparring partners in preparation for Pacquiao?s June 28 showdown with WBC lightweight champion David Diaz has been knocked out in a fight in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Norwood who was disqualified for a series of low blows against Johnnie ?Lumberjack? Edwards (14-2-1, 8 KO?s)in the sixth round last September 16 was knocked out by Edwards at 2:51 of the seventh round after being dropped in round three.
As a result the 38 year old southpaw who was chosen by Roach so he could approximate the fighting style of Diaz who, like Pacquiao is also a southpaw, is not likely to be able to spar for some time.
Edwards had previously lost by a first round TKO to undefeated Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa in a battle for the North American Boxing Federation featherweight title last February 22. Gamboa.who currently had a record of 10-0 with 8 knockouts is being touted as a future world champion.
