Filipino flyweight Danilo Lerio has scored an impressive one round knockout over Australian Matt Meredith while younger brother Roberto Lerio also won a six round split decision over Emmanuel Micallef at the West Tigers Leagues Club in New South Wales.
Todd Makelim who fought Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and lost by a third round TKO in a scheduled ten round bout in 1999 and who handles the Lerio brothers said Danilo?s opponent ?should not have been in the ring with him although it was a good tune-up fight ?Makelim also noted that the win would ?increase his sponsors as well as audience within the Campbelltown region where he is based.?
Makelim informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Danilo?s next fight will be against ?a top contender for a world rating.?
With the win 27 year old Danilo Lerio, a talented southpaw, improved to 14-2-1 with 3 knockouts while the 26 year old Meredith dropped to 3-6-1 with 1 knockout.
Roberto Lerio came back from his third round knockout loss to undefeated Daniel Iannazzo last March 28. Makelim said it was ?good to get Roberto back in the winning circle and to build his confidence back up.?
In what appeared to be seriously questionable, judge Charlie Lucas scored the fight 58-57 in favor of Micallef while Gill Jones scored a 60-53 shutout for Lerio and Les Fear had the Filipino winning by a 59-55 margin.
Lerio improved to 6-6-0 with 2 knockouts while the 24 year old Micallef nicknamed ?Mama?s Boy? suffered his third straight loss.
