LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The wedding godfather of Manny Pacquiao said what happened to Cebuano boxer Z Gorres “won’t happen to Pacquiao because the Holy Spirit will protect him” when he squares off with Miguel Angel Cotto today for the WBO welterweight title at the MGM Grand Arena, here.
“Manny is a deeply religious person and he is always in the graces of the Lord,” quipped Rey Golinggan, Pacquiao’s wedding godfather and spiritual adviser.
Golinggan’s statement came after Gorres, 27, was hospitalized and underwent brain operation when he collapsed after choking up a 10-round unanimous decision win over Luis Mendez of Columbia last night at the Mandalay Bay House of Blues.
He said, Pacquiao is disciplined fighter and is both mentally and physically fit. “God will never allow any untoward incident in his fight against Cotto because both fighters are in fact spiritually strong,” said Golinggan, who owns a gym in Gen. Santos City where Pacquiao first honed his skills as amateur.
