SAN FRANCISCO -- Riding on the momentum of a very fruitful 6-1 road trip, the Golden State Warriors returned to the friendly environs of the Aracle Arena on Tuesday night and handled a game but overwhelmed New Orleans Hornets, 103-96,
New Orleans shot well from the field -- 35-of-75 -- but after overhauling a 12-point deficit and knotting the score at 92 late in the fourth quarter, the Hornets ran out of steam and lost their eighth game in a row.
"We had a lot of confidence tonight, a lot more than in the past. It's no fun when a team's catching up on you like that, but I think we had confidence we could make plays down the stretch. But we found a way to do that by making stops," Warriors center-forward David Lee, who finished with 26 points, told NBA.com.
Sharp-shooter Stephen Curry had a quiet 13 points, but other Golden State chargers made up for their star's low production. Klay Thompson pumped 19, Carl Landry had 16 while Jarrett Jack also produced 16 to go along with ten assists.
The Hornets somehow lost despite getting 28 points from Ryan Anderson and 20 and 11 assists from 6-foot-6 point guard Greivis Vasquez.
"It's just a tough loss for us, especially when you tie it up, you have a chance to win. All you need is a couple of stops and a couple of buckets. We just haven't found that closing mentality, a couple guys who can knock down a shot or even get to the free throw line," a frustrated New Orleans head coach Monty Williams said as he watched his team plummet to 5-19.
