The trainer of IBF flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane whose title defense against European champion Silvio Olteanu in Germany on Saturday has been canceled believes it?s a blessing in disguise.
Trainer Nick Durandt said the news that mandatory challenger Olteanu injured one of his hands in training and was unable to challenge the South African, may be for the best with the IBF agreeing to let Mthalane make a voluntary defense in December.
Super Sport in South Africa quoted Durandt who said "My initial reaction was to hit the ceiling. There have been so many strange developments regarding the fight, which had already been postponed for a month.?
He noted that Mthalane was to defend his title for what he termed ? a ridiculously low purse of R85 000? which is equivalent to some $8,500 and is regarded as an insult to Mthalane who has been champion since 2009 and gave 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire a somewhat difficult time when Donaire won by a 6th round TKO on November 1, 2008 after breaking the little South African?s nose.
The purse bid was so low because no South African promoter showed up for the purse bid but Durandt said ?there are encouraging signs that one or two South African groups are now willing to come to the party.?
