Celebrated Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has won a record seventh Eddie Futch ?Trainer of the Year? award from the Boxing Writers Association of America.
Roach?s prized possession is eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao whose two victories in a rematch with Timothy ?Desert Storm? Bradley and his dominating win over WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri whom he dropped six times en route to a lopsided win and Miguel Cotto?s middleweight championship victory over Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez, helped clinch the award for Roach.
Roach had previously won the ?Trainer of the Year? award in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013.
In learning of the award named after the great Eddie Futch who was Roach?s mentor when Roach was fighting and later became an assistant to Futch.
Roach said ?words cannot express how much winning an award with Edie Futch?s name on it means to me. I?d like to thank the BWAA for this honor.?
He said ?my name may be on the plaque but I am just a representative of the collective hard work and dedication from the most talented and hardest working fighters and assistant trainers in the world. It is a privilege to work with them.?
