Top Rank Promotions decision not to enter a purse bid for a final title eliminator against Hugo Ruiz and to shun a fight against Ruiz for a mandatory WBC title shot at super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz has resulted in Ruiz being appointed mandatory contender.
In a brief statement the WBC said it has been ?notified by Top Rank Promotions that Nonito Donaire will not fight against Hugo Ruiz in a bout which was ordered by the WBC as a final elimination to determine the mandatory contender of the super bantamweight division; consequently, Hugo Ruiz has been appointed mandatory contender to fight WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz.?
Donaire, the five division world champion who had earlier indicated he would wish to fight Santa Cruz for the Mexican?s title has instead decided to take what is regarded as an easier fight than Ruiz and will face France?s Anthony Settoul in a ten round, non title bout in Macau on July 18 before hopefully getting a crack at the WBA title of Britain?s Scott Quigg.
However, Quigg has to first overcome Mexico?s Kiko Martinez also on July 18 in Manchester.
