A glance at the upcoming schedule of fights in Japan confirm that Filipino flyweight Gilbert De La Torre will fight undefeated Japanese Shigetaka Ikehara on June 4 at the famous Korakuen Hall.
The executive secretary of the Japan Boxing Commission Tsuyoshi Yasukochi told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today in an overseas telephone conversation that the fight will take place after it was approved by the Philippine Games and Amusements Board.
For the record the 25 year old Ikehara has a record of 13-0-1 with 10 knockouts while De La Torre according to boxrec.com has a record of 7-5-1 with 1 knockout.
Records show that De La Torre lost by a seventh round TKO to Japan’s Masaharu Naganawa last December 9. In a previous fight on April 25 last year the Filipino suffered a third round knockout at the hands of Thailand’s Saengpetch Sor Sakulphan.
The Japan Boxing Commission executive secretary also informed us that the old rule which required a Filipino boxer to be ranked in the top ten to be allowed to fight in Japan has been expanded to the top twelve.
Last April 30 Filipino super flyweight Pingping Tepura (10-8-5, 4 KO's) who had suffered a brutal first round KO by world-rated Bert Batawang on January 21 was matched against undefeated Japanese star Daiki Kameda (8-0, 6 KO's) and lost by a third round TKO.
