Lucas Matthysse gets his chance to win the WBC super lightweight title relinquished by Danny Garcia when he faces Viktor ?Iceman? Postol of Ukraine in a title fight approved by president Mauricio Sulaiman and the World Boxing Council Championship Committee.
The WBC said Matthysse ?waited patiently for his chance since being defeated by Garcia on September14, 2013.?
The WBC website noted ?that night Lucas who was the Interim champion lost his belt, leaving a big question mark about his future.?
However, Matthysse, the 32 year old Argentine, came back to win three bouts in a row including the most recent battle in which he won by a majority decision in an epic battle with hard-hitting , 31 year old Russian Ruslan Provodnikov last April 18 in Verona, New York and will now star along with Postol with the WBC super lightweight crown at stake.
Former champion Danny Garcia hasn?t had a title fight since 2014 although he scored a 2nd round knockout over Rod Salka in a non title fight and followed this up with a majority decision over Lamont Peterson.
According to the WBC, Garcia is waiting for confirmation of a planned welterweight fight against Paulie Malignaggi.
