World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman has announced that the highly prestigious WBC Diamond belt will be at stake when Leon Santa Cruz battles Abner Mares in an eagerly awaited showdown set for August 29 in Los Angeles, California.

The WBC website reported that the Board of Governors voted in favor of approving "the highly prestigious WBC Diamond belt to the extraordinary fight between Mares and Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz is a world champion in two divisions and current WBC super bantamweight champion while Mares, a world champion in three divisions will finally clash after years of anticipation for this great fight.

Sulaiman said "the WBC is honored to be part of this great event and we wish both of them the best of luck.'

Five division world champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire had earlier indicated he was interested in facing Santa Cruz for his 122 pound title with the possibility that Donaire who has had two solid wins after a crushing 6th round TKO loss to the bigger and stronger Nicholas "Axe Man" Walters in a featherweight title fight, may now consider facing the winner of the Santa Cruz-Mares title fight.
