No. 5 ranked Filipino featherweight Rey Perez steps into the ring at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas on Sunday, Manila Time, against talented junior featherweight Chris Avalos in an eight round bout on a Top Rank card.
Avalos, (25-3, 19 knockouts) replaces unbeaten Jessie Magdaleno, who suffered an injury during training camp late last week. Magdaleno had to withdraw from the fight when he suffered an injury to his right hand.
Perez (20-6, 5 KOs) has had a somewhat up and down career is coming off a 4th round TKO of Jovill Marayan last June 2 after suffering back-to-back losses.
Avalos is determined to come back from a TKO loss to world champion Carl Frampton last February which was his first setback after he had won six fights in a row.
Avalos was quoted as saying he had no excuses for the loss to Frampton. He said ?I just got caught. I trained hard for that title fight and would like to get a rematch. That?s my goal. Rey Perez is next. I?ve seen video of a couple of his fights, so I know what he is all about. Even though I wasn?t scheduled to fight, I had been training for quite a while when my manager, Mike Criscio got the call for our team to head to Texas.?
