Former world super flyweight champion Gerry Pe?alosa gives undefeated Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista a slight edge 55-45 over WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in their August 11 battle which will headline Golden Boy Promotions Philippines-Mexico World Cup at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California to be telecast over HBO’s “Boxing After Dark”.
In an interview with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today Pe?alosa said that if the title fight took place one year from now “I am one hundred percent sure Bautista would win” pointing out that at the present time Ponce De Leon has an edge “experience-wise and the quality of opponents” he has fought.
Pe?alosa noted that Bautista is only 20 years old but “very strong and if he catches Ponce De Leon he will go down.”
The 34 year old veteran who was chosen among the top ten Filipino boxers of all-time said Bautista was a disciplined young fighter who trains hard and he expects him to be there and put pressure on the champion from the first round to the last.
Bautista, according to Pe?alosa who will fight reigning WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzales on the same Golden Boy Promotions fight card said Bautista is “very hungry for a world title and Mr. Tony Aldeguer (the respected boxing patron who owns the famed ALA Gym) deserves it.”
