LAS VEGAS ? In what appeared to be a controversial stoppage by Referee Tony Weeks, Andre Ward won by 8th round TKO over Sergey Kovalev at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Events Center here Saturday night as Ward retained his WBO, WBA and IBF world light heavyweight titles and remained undefeated in his illustrious boxing career.
Kovalev appeared to be ahead on the scorecards when Ward connected with a vicious right hand to Kovalev's chin in the 8th round that hurt Kovalev. Ward, who earlier in the round connected a low blow that the referee has not seen, followed it up with a barrage of punches that drove Kovalev to the ropes. Ward connected with several body shots and some of it appeared to be low on the waistline as Kovalev crouched down when veteran Referee Tony Weeks waived off the contest.
Kovalev looked confused of what's going when Ward climbed the ropes to celebrate as the crowd was stunned with the sudden end of the fight.
After seven rounds, judge Steve Weisfeld had Kovalev ahead 68-65 while judges Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti had Ward ahead 67-66.
Ward improves his record with 32 wins with 16 stoppages whild Kovalev dropped to 30-2-1, 26 KOs.
