It appears that the WBA will adopt the “bridgeweight” name for its super cruiserweight division. Over the weekend, Evgeny Tishchenko (13-1, 8 KOs) made history by officially becoming the first WBA bridgeweight champion by defeating Leon Harth (22-6-1, 13 KOs) at the Agenda Arena in Dubai. Tishchenko knocked down Harth in the second round and finished him in the sixth round to claim the belt in the 200-224 pound weight class.
The Bridger Weight is a weight category in professional boxing created in November 2020 by the World Boxing Council. The category is named after six-year-old American boy Bridger Walker, who saved his four-year-old sister from a stray dog attack in July 2020, leaving her with numerous irreversible injuries.
The president of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán stated that the decision to create this new weight category was motivated by the need to create a division to accommodate a large number of boxers who were between 200 and 220 lbs.
