Former undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez is taking full control of his promotional career.
In a sit-down interview with Vegas Sports Today, Lopez officially announced the launch of his self-owned banner, Takeover Promotions, while confirming a strategic partnership with global streaming giant DAZN. The move comes ahead of his August 22 challenge against WBA welterweight champion Rolando "Rolly" Romero at the T-Mobile Arena.
The decision officially closes the door on a potential deal with Dana White's Zuffa Boxing endeavor, as Lopez explained why DAZN aligned better with his vision for the sport.
Rejecting Zuffa Boxing for DAZN
Despite reports of an offer on the table from Zuffa Boxing, Lopez opted for DAZN, citing the platform's consolidation of elite talent and major promotional partners.
"It just wasn't my style," Lopez said regarding the Zuffa Boxing proposal [01:30]. "It doesn't represent what I believe in. DAZN is collecting all the major promoters, and all the big fights are on that side across the pond. There's nobody on Zuffa that's in the welterweight division right now other than Conor Benn."
Lopez pointed out that DAZN’s global footprint offers the clearest path toward big-money matchups and division unification [01:46]. "DAZN is taking over," Lopez added. "They are the people that are capitalizing and understanding the market and the value of the sport. I love it and I respect it, so I think it was a no-brainer for me."
Learning from Past Performance
Reflecting on recent performances—including tough decision victories over Sandor Martin and Jamaine Ortiz, as well as his January decision loss to Shakur Stevenson—Lopez framed every ring appearance as an essential part of his evolution.
"Everything's a blessing," Lopez said. "Every fight has a good reason, whether you win or lose, why you learn and what you are learning from it. Mainly for me, it's my mindset though. If I really want something bad, I'm going to get it."
Aiming for Undisputed at Welterweight
With Takeover Promotions now operational and DAZN backing his broadcast presence, Lopez outlined an ambitious timeline for his move up to 147 pounds.
"My goal before the 2028 Olympic Games start is to be undisputed in the welterweight division," Lopez revealed.
Starting with his clash against Romero on August 22, Lopez believes launching his own promotional banner sets the baseline for the remainder of his prime years.
"I have a floor, and the more I keep winning, the floor just keeps getting better," Lopez said.
