World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo yesterday assailed what he termed as an 'unfortunate' event surrounding the recent death of former boxing hearthrob Jun Gorres, describing the latter as someone 'very close to me.'

Panoncillo, who will be arriving to supervise the Rey Bautista-Obote Ameme showdown this Saturday, expressed sadness over Gorres' sudden death, even as he mentioned that the ex-boxer endeared to him especially when they were together in Hawaii in 2002 where Panoncillo acted as Gorres' business manager.

An autopsy result done on Gorres had revealed that the boxer did not commit suicide, but was ganged-up by at least five assailants on Friday night in Bakilid, Mandaue. Gorres was in terred yesterday.

Meanwhile, former World Boxing Council flyweight king Malcolm Tu?acao and current WBC no. 1 minimumweight Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol yesterday expressed disgust at the sudden death of their former stablemate at the ALA Gym.

Tu?acao and Mayol, who are both in Japan training under their new manager Yasuo Matsuoka's guidance, decried what befell on Gorres, indicating that peace and order is one of the reasons why they have opted to train in a foreign country.

"Please extend our condolences to the Gorres family," said Tu?acao and Mayol in a joint e-mail.

Tu?acao is set to vie for the OPBF bantam title this Saturday in Tokyo against Thai champ Kumarnthong Por Pluemkamol.
