Built up as ?The Golden Boy? with no less than Oscar de la Hoya predicting a great future, Venezuela?s Jorge Linares suffered a shocking 2nd round TKO to hard-hitting Mexican Sergio ?Yeyo? Thompson in a lightweight title eliminator at the Oasis Hotel in Thompson?s hometown of Cancun, Sunday Manila Time.

Thompson caught Linares with some solid shots in round one but the former two-division world champion fought back in the later stages of the opening round.

However, Thompson hurt Linares midway in the second round and then dropped him with a barrage of punches.

Although Linares beat the count he appeared groggy aside from having a severe cut over his left eye which forced referee Bill Clancy to call a halt at 2:27 of the round and declare Thompson winner by TKO.

It was a major setback for Linares who was scheduled to face WBC champion Antonio DeMarco in a rematch after losing their first bloody battle by an 11th round TKO on October 15, 2011.

Thompson?s win puts him in line for a title shot at DeMarco.

The win moved Thompson?s record to 22-0 with 20 KO?s and his TKO of Linares was his sixth consecutive stoppage victory while Linares dropped to 31-3 with 20- knockouts.
