BOXING referee-judge Gerald Bassig at the young age of 40 is dead.

He suffered a cardiac arrest while training as a martial artist on December 6 in Taguig. He collapsed after taking a rest.

He was still breathing when he was rushed to the St. Lukes Hospital. But he was no longer breathing upon reaching the hospital.

He was rushed by his father Grand Master Nicolas Bassig.

Bassig, who was residing in Caloocan City, was a young professional referee-judge that has reached the international level. He had officiated a World Boxing Federation fight in Thailand recently.

He earlier attended the World Boxing Association Asia Convention in Vietnam together with WBA President Gilbert Alvarado.

His last assignment was during the “Blow by Blow” by former champion Manny Pacquiao last December 1 in Ramon Magsaysay covered court in Quezon City.

Among his co-referees who were shocked upon learning the news:

“Very sudden nga ang pag kawala nya [His loss was very sudden],” said Oliver Garcia of Sampaloc, Manila.

“Ako man din sir halos hindi makatayo sa masasamang balita na yan [Even I, sir, could hardly stand the bad news],” said Nowel Haduca of Quezon City.
