Despite the continuous heavy rain in Metropolis, the 1st Dr. GM Eugene Torre FIDE Standard Open chess tournament gets underway in Marikina City.
No less than Eugene Torre, Asia's First Grandmaster, a World Chess Federation Hall of Famer led the opening ceremony on Sunday along with tournament organizer Jay Enage.
"Chess is like life, and we must always protect and promote the Three Kings: the Mental, Physical and Spiritual Kings," said Torre.
The event was supported by Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro and Congressman Marcy Teodoro. Participants included some of the country's top chess players led by IMs Ricardo de Guzman, Barlo Nadera, Jose Efren Bagamasbad and Ronald Bancod , NM Oscar Joseph Cantela and NM Jasper Faeldonia.
A total of 226 woodpushers saw in action in this 2 day National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned tournament.
