Mexican prospect Juan Pérez, "Super Güerito de Tepito," secured a victory against his compatriot Oswaldo Morales (3-4, 2 KOs) at the San Juan de La Barrera Olympic Gymnasium in Mexico City.
Juan Pérez (3-0, 0 KOs) had an impressive entrance to the ring, accompanied by mariachis, wearing a sombrero and traditional Mexican attire, which was seen by thousands of fans watching the television broadcast.
The humble young icon from the legendary Tepito neighborhood of Mexico City maintained his distance, exchanging combinations of punches and staying out of the danger zone. At times, Morales invited him to brawl in the center of the ring, exchanging blows, and at certain moments, the fans booed the fight.
In the fifth round, the referee called the fighters' attention to the fact that they should continue boxing. By the sixth round, there was a more intense exchange, with Morales repeatedly inviting "Super Güerito" to brawl.
The judges awarded the victory to Super Guerito Pérez by unanimous decision with scores of 58-56, 58-56, and 59-55.
There is no precedent in the history of world boxing for a boxer with only three fights to have the media attention and promotional structure that Juan Pérez's career has enjoyed, from his amateur days to his professional debut.
