The founding secretary general of the World Boxing Council, lawyer Rudy Salud, says he is ?very impressed? with ?The Filipino Flash? Nonito Donaire who ripped former WBA bantamweight champion and Olympic bronze medalist Wladimir Sidorenko yo win the WBC Continental Americas title by a 4th round knockout at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Sunday.
Salud who watched the ?In Harm?s Way? fight card telecast by ABS-CBN Channel 2 said ?Donaire is super. His strongest asset is that his mind is working all the time. He sizes up his opponent every second and knows what he needs to do and what his opponent is planning to do. Every move is well calculated. His anticipation is well timed. Donaire is definitely going to be a world champion for a long time.?
Salud said that aside from his speed and movement, Donaire also ?possesses power and he is still growing. When he moves up in weight and bulks up he should be devastating.?
The former WBC official who also headed the ratings committee at a time when the late Games and Amusements Board chairman Justiniano Montano was WBC president noted that Sidorenko ?was no bum? citing the fact that in the 2000 Sydney Olympics he had beaten Daniel Ponce De Leon and Omar Narvaez who later became world champions.
Salud said Sidorenko lost his world bantamweight title to the reigning world champion Anselmo Moreno and looked bad because Donaire was so good.
Donaire himself told boxingscene.com ?this was my best performance by far. My fight versus Vic Drachinyan was one punch. This was a complete performance.? His trainer Robert Garcia agreed saying Donaire was ?great. He was the whole package. It was balance, footwork and power.?
However Salud, like pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao?s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza said there was no need to claim that Donaire is the next Pacquiao because they both have their special attributes and there can only be one Many Pacquiao in our lifetime.
Ariza said he thought Donaire was ?good but it?s a little early to compare him to Manny Pacquiao when the guys he?s fighting are so small. But when he starts fighting guys that are three weight classes above him and stuff like that then you can compare him to Manny.?
