Undefeated Filipino super flyweight champion Rey Perez has lost in a hard fought ten round bout against former two-time WBA champion Nobuo Nashiro of Japan in a fight card in Osaka.
Nashiro who lost his WBA title to Hugo Cazares in a rematch in May last year and then dropped a close decision to Mexico?s lanky Tomas Rojas earlier this year banked on his hand-speed and footwork to overcome Perez who is ranked No. 8 by the WBO.
Two judges scored the fight for Nashiro by a margin of 97-94 while the third judge had the Japanese ahead 99-92.
Hall-of-Fame boxing writer, fight manager and matchmaker Joe Koizumi reported that the 29 year old Nashiro ?utilized his speed on hand and foot, piling up points steadily. He kept connecting with solid one-two combinations upstairs and downstairs.?
Perez, on the other hand, threw sharp jabs and left-right combinations but often f ailed to connect against the elusive Japanese.
Koizumi reported that the 20 year old Perez, the WBO Youth champion was ?a good loser who won the praise of the crowd.? With the win Nashiro improved to 15-3-1 with 9 knockouts while Perez who suffered his first setback dropped to 11-1 with 2 knockouts.
