The Philippines Nesthy Petecio lost a 10-11 heartbreaker to Italy?s Valeria Calabrese in her opening bout at the AIBA World Women?s Championships in Qinhuangdao, China.
The loss dashed Petecio?s valiant try to qualify for the Olympiad in the 51 Kg flyweight category.
An AIBA report said the first round ended even at 2-2 while Petecio took the second 4-3 to go ahead by a point 6-5 at the end of the second round.
The 30 year old Italian girl regained the lead by winning the third round 4-3 before the fourth and final round which once again ended an even 2-2 to give Calabrese a 11-10 victory.
Calabrese won the light flyweight gold medal at the European Championships in August 2010 but last year finished 5th in the bantamweight division in October 2011 behind gold medalist Nicola Adams of England.
In the first event of the year held in the Serbian town of Sombor the huge number of entries in the 51 kg category forced the organizers to divide the boxers into two groups.
Italy?s European champion Calabrese outpointed Spain?s ?Road to Bridgetown? boxer Yasmina Musa to win the first final.
Also in the team vying for honors in the non-Olympic categories are Josie Gabuco (48 Kg) and Alice Kate Aparri (54 Kg) who lost in a box off with Petecio for the right to compete in the Olympic qualifier in China.
