Britain's Amir Khan who has in the past said he was confident of beating Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao if ever they met has had his ambitions shattered following a first round knockout in less than 60 seconds in a WBO Intercontinental title fight against Colombia's Breidis Prescott.

Two cracking lefts sent Khan crashing to the canvas just thirty seconds into the fight and although he beat the count the 21 year old Briton was obviously in trouble.

Prescott went after Khan and hammered him with another series of punches sending Khan to the canvas one more time to be counted out at 54 seconds of the first round.

It was a first defeat for Khan, who won an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Olympics, in the 19th fight of his professional career.

BBC Sport quoted Khan as saying "I made a little mistake in there and couldn't get it back again. It was a stupid mistake. That's boxing. One punch can change the fight. I'm fine but I need to go back to the drawing board and put it right. I'm a world beater and I'm going to come back stronger. I'm really sorry to my fans."

Khan whose defense was always suspect hired Cuban trainer Jorge Rubio to help out but apparently it didn't help. This was evident when Prescott caught Khan with a vicious left hook at the end of a series of punches that dropped him.

Khan beat the count but almost immediately walked into a right which signalled the beginning of the end of his dreams for the time being as well as his unbeaten record. record.

It was Khan's first fight on pay per view television and his first bout since starting to work with Cuban trainer Rubio. Promoter Frank Warren told BBC Sport he was taking the responsibility for putting him in the ring with the dangerous Prescott..""This guy was recommended by the new trainer but ultimately I take responsibility and it's back to the drawing board. "

Warren added "He was caught cold. We knew this guy was a dangerous puncher. He's not the first fighter to be beat and come back to win world titles. It's how you come back from it."
